exercise 14.1 class 11 A Postnatal Test for the Separation of the Rectus Abdominus ("Rec test")

Separation of the rectus abdominis (the "six pack") muscle, occurs in about two thirds of women during the latter stages of pregnancy.

Before you resume exercising -- usually 6 weeks for a natural delivery and 10 weeks for a c-section, your GP or Midwife may perform this test to check that the rectus abdominis muscle has rejoined (usually by 6 weeks the gap will be 2 fingers wide or less).

You can do this test yourself following this video. Remember to check above and below the naval. If your gap is significantly wider than 2 fingers after 6 weeks you may need to consult your doctor who may then refer you to a physiotherapist before resuming exercise.
